What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are dilations of blood vessels in the anus. The anus contains a large number of blood and nerve endings, which can become dilated and filled with blood, forming what are known as hemorrhoidal packages.

These hemorrhoidal packages usually go through periods of calm and aggressiveness, and they appear for many reasons, such as heredity, lifestyle habits, diet, stress, childbirth, etc.

Hemorrhoids are not usually painful. They are characterized by bleeding episodes that tend to calm down afterward. However, this calm is short-lived, and over time the condition can worsen, with more frequent and severe episodes.

More than half of the population suffers or has suffered from a hemorrhoidal episode at some point.

Some hemorrhoidal conditions are accompanied by pain, itching, or the sensation of needing to defecate without being able to do so easily. This is due to possible crises not involving bleeding, which may lead to thrombosis and result in very intense pain.

How can hemorrhoids be treated?

The treatments applied in most medical centers are either palliative or surgical.

Palliative treatments, such as creams and medication, are not a definitive solution — only a temporary one.

Surgical treatments are performed using conventional surgery, with scalpel or laser scalpel, cryotherapy, or ultrasound.
